I've seen several songs being credited as "the first metal" song, among them Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer and Vanilla Fudge's You Keep Me Hanging On from the mid-ish 60's. I'm not sure anybody really has a definite determination of which bands are "metal", for me it's more about the music rather than the label. I've seen bands like Slayer, AC/DC, Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth - all of whom have been called metal or some form of it. To me it's loud and it's fast, what else do you want??
