Hot and Dirty Sax

Hot and Dirty Sax .....is what rock and roll is built on? Or is it?

Courtney Love reckons the saxophone 'doesn't belong in rock'n'roll'. She's wrong: it brings the music to life.

So says Laura Barton in the Guardian....

    http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/apr/16/saxophone-rock-and-roll-courtney-love?CMP=EMCNEWEML6619I2

I have no intention of doing a copy and paste job of the article, you can read it for yourselves if you are interested.

I do know that since the days of Little Richard ( the guy in the photo for those who don't know who he is/was) that hot saxophones have been an essential part of rock music and soul music. Whether it was that amazing sax player who supported Tina Turner, or Lou Reeds Walk on the Wild Side the saxophone gives an added dimension and vibrancy.

What do you think (and please more answers than Jady). Is the sax part of rock, or is rock only guitars and drums? Surely not - what about other instruments.....like organs?

    I await your comments.....

Saxophone is certainly part of rock and roll, in my view any instrument is. My motto is, if it sounds right for the song/tune then anything goes.

Courtney has too narrow a definition of rock and roll - every instrument can be used. The tune is the thing xxxx

If Courtney Love thinks a saxophone doesn't belong in rock 'n' roll then how is she gonna cope with the flute use by Jethro Tull?

We always had a sax player in our basement bands in the 60s. There is a lot of rock you can't play without a sax and besides Jack was my best friend.
A lott of the stuff your on about though is after my time. I had moved on to Paul Desmond and Fraser MacPherson

My mind immediately went to the old SNL bit with Emily Latilla where she ranted about Sax and Violins on television.

Courtney Love can play what? 4 maybe 5 chords on the guitar? She is a rock and roll moron imho!

    Love Live Rock!!

Rock is very much a style of music and a style that can be played on multiple different instruments, providing certain principles are being adhered to then any instrument can be used, from flutes as used by Jethro Tull and Cello's used brilliantly by the duo 2 Cellos.
