Please Please Me

Its now 50 years since the Beatles recorded the Please Please Me Album in less than 24 hours. It had a huge impact on teenagers like me at the time, and its influence on popular music is still felt.

Why, because it successfully coalesced the strands of American black music and UK working class music and was also noteworthy because it was the first ever (I think) album where some of the songs were written by the performers. It also changed the way we looked at music - we bought LPs instead of singles; for all you peeps who download tracks it meant that we could listen to more than just one track. Maybe that seems counter intuitive now but it gave my generation the opportunity to look at musical genres in more depth.Yes we still love and loved the 3-4 minute song, but an album enabled us to look at an artist(e)s work in more depth.

Looking back its difficult to tell you all how important it was and what an impact it made at the time. The next Beatles LP (With the Beatles) was waited for with baited breath by me and all my friends, and the LP cover format was later copied by both 10cc and Queen . I was doubly lucky to be able to see the Beatles live in Manchester in 1963 ...as a supporting act to Roy Orbison. See is the key word as you could not hear a note, because of the screaming of the girl fans.

This recording was made in February 2013, and is a tribute to that breakthrough that they made. If you have the time and the inclination then listen to the original....John Lennon's flu influenced voice on Twist and Shout is still one of the great rock songs (and it was cover version of the Isley Brothers which as a mean soul track).

They ...the Beatles ...opened the door for so many other UK bands.

As an aside TG Angels could do worse than make a cover version of Boys...with a bigger sax solo for Jady. Its still a great number.

    Enjoy
