Having just posted my Desert Island playlist, I started thinking about my top films. I have nearly 400 DVDs, so picking just 8 was difficult. Even then there is one film missing from my collection.

    Shakespeare in Love
    Dirty Dancing
    Avatar
    The Hill
    The Cruel Sea
    Jungle Book
    Ice Age
    The Blues Brothers

My tastes change but I am still a sucker for a good plot and storyline where emotions are shown and you get involved as a viewer. I have tried to pick 8 movies that still linger in the mind, so most of my choices are from ages ago - but the quality in them all is still there in my view.

A Man and a Woman, with Anouk Aimee and Jean Louis Trintignant. An evocative love story (in French Un homme et une Femme) which tugs at the heart strings

The Birds starring Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor. I first saw this Hitchcock movie in London in the early 1970s...and on leaving the cinema in Shepherds Bush we ran to the car.....there were rows of birds perched along the tops of the buildings....scary

Bullitt - Steve McQueen. Released early 70s, the first movie with a car chase. McQueen was the cool guy....and as well as the famous car chase in San Francisco there is a tight plot and Robert Vaughan, Jacqueline Bisser and other actors giving good performances

A River runs through it, directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt...to me the mantle of screen heartthrob was passed from one to the other. Great acting also from Craig Sheffer, Tom Skerrit and Brenda Blethyn.....and a moving storyline about fishing...

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. Newman and Redford and Katherine Ross in a marvellous movie - with funny moments, pathos and action

The Thomas Crown Affair - both versions though I prefer the original with McQueen and Dunaway - a movie of its time where lust is implied in teh cognac drinking scene

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thomas_Crown_Affair_(1968_film)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thomas_Crown_Affair_(1999_film)

The Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI) George Lucas takes us into his Sci Fi world and influenced many of us wuth Darth Vader as teh ultimate baddie and makes a star out of Harrison Ford.

Get Carter - Best ever English gangster movie with Michael Caine in top form with an excellent cast including Ian Hendry and John Osbourne

I could have picked 8 from other decades - most of my choices are 1970s, though I saw Man and a Woman for the first time in the '70s, which I think was a golden age of movie making. It would be great to make 8 choices from different decades. I would add Blow Up from the 70s, or Midnight Cowboy if I could pick 2 more. And dont forget The Godfather Trilogy or the wonderful Russian made War & Peace which was 8 hours long...or La Cage aux Folles in French.

Thanks for creating this thread Josephine. Like you I have massive DID collection, even bigger than my shoe collection, so it is big. Narrowing it down to just eight will be difficult. Well done for including The Hill in your list. It's a sadly overlooked classic and in my opinion probably Sean Connery's best film x

I have a couple of thousand films, if I was limited to just 8 then at the moment that would be:

    The Big Chill
    Local Hero
    The Bad and The Beautiful
    Moon
    Josie & The Pussycats
    An American Werewolf in London
    Princess Bride
    In Bruges

an Interesting idea. I dont have that many films, but my eight would be, in no particular order

    Life of Brian
    The Muppet Christmas Carol
    Brazil
The Lord of the Rings (can I have that as one?)
    Shrek
Back To The Future (I will stick to the first one)
    The Commitments
    The Time Bandits
