The Sociologist, Anthony Giddens, theorises that in these times of 'high modernity' with people having ready access to the internet and social networking sites. More and more people are resorting to 'communicating intimacy', sharing thoughts , feelings and emotions, with others.

As it's widely known that the internet is inhabited by,' creeps, charlatans and predators' who use these not simply as a vehicle to communicate with others and enhance their lives in reality.

So that use and abuse of these facilities becomes not only stressful and addictive, many people end up, living their lives through these sites, non of which exist in reality.

In cyberspace you can be anyone you want!

To what extent then does this lead top,'power without responsibility, and just how harmful is it? Given that most addictions bring about feelings of self loathing and low self esteem, which are highly, self destructive....

    Good topic Michael.

I'd imagine that as an overall percentage there are far more normal people (whatever normal is) using the internet than there are creeps, charlatans and/or predators.'

The internet can be used to enhance ones life. It can also, like you point out, have an adverse effect, but that's true of any form of interaction.

There's always a debate about internet based relations/communications not being seen as real. Lets look at the definition of the word 'reality' ....

    1. The quality or state of being actual or true.

Like all forms of communication, there's a risk that what you're being fed or indeed you're feeding others can be 100% accurate, can be misleading, exaggerated or down right untrue. It's not just prevalent on the internet, but in all forms of communication.

What I will say about the Internet is that's its easier to be yourself here. To really let go and express yourself with an element of security and safety.

The most profound relationship you'll ever have is with yourself in your head. Alot of the stuff in there, never sees the light of, does it make it any less real to the person experiencing it? I don't know.

I might have to come back to this one. Have to leave at 1:30.
