Transgender Anthems

I wasn't sure if we have done this before or not, maybe we have but I couldn't find a forum about it.

There are of course several normal songs like Shania Twain's, " Man I feel like a woman" which the TG community has turned into one of its own anthems; and here is a little factoid Shania will be 50 this year.

So girls and boys which are your favourite Transgender anthems?

Walk on the Wild Side, which was actually played yesterday morning on mainstream Sunday morning Radio Manchester is one of mine; as is Queen's I wanna break free, but it has to be Lola by the Kinks

According to a 2004 piece in Rolling Stone magazine, it may have been inspired by the famous transvestite Candy Darling, who Kinks lead singer Ray Davies allegedly dated for a brief time. This is the same Candy mentioned in Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side" ("Candy came from out on the island, in the backroom she was everybody's darling").

Along with Pauline and Nina, it has to be 'Lola'. Maybe a British first and certainly one of the best.

I know it's not really "anthemic" but what about "Dude looks like a Lady" (Aerosmith) and also "That's the way" (Zeppelin) - although it's more gay in connotation than TV.

    Rita,

The Lola car photo is the original Lola prototype car , I think Lola was involved in car racing for a long time -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_Cars

Bruce McLaren won Le Mans in a Ford GT40, which was basically a Lola with a Ford engine - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_GT40

As to Bruce McLaren and McLaren, I think you could say he is the original DNA of McLaren.....

Bruce Leslie McLaren (30 August 1937 – 2 June 1970) was a New Zealand race-car designer, driver, engineer and inventor.

His name lives on in the McLaren team which has been one of the most successful in Formula One championship history, with McLaren cars and drivers winning a total of 20 world championships. McLaren cars totally dominated CanAm sports car racing with 56 wins, a considerable number of them with him behind the wheel, between 1967 and 1972 (and five constructors’ championships), and have won three Indianapolis 500 races, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 12 Hours of Sebring.

    Hope that helps

PS Some stuff about the origins of how Lola, the song was written by Ray Davies

Ray Davies has claimed that he was inspired to write "Lola" after the band manager Robert Wace had spent a night in Paris dancing with a transvestite.[6] Davies said, "In his apartment, Robert had been dancing with this black woman, and he said, 'I'm really onto a thing here.' And it was okay until we left at six in the morning and then I said, 'Have you seen the stubble?' He said 'Yeah,' but he was too pissed [intoxicated] to care, I think."[7]

Drummer Mick Avory has offered an alternate explanation for the song's lyrics, claiming that "Lola" was partially inspired by Avory's frequenting of transvestite bars in west London after being invited by publicist Michael McGrath.[8] Avory said, "We used to know this character called Michael McGrath. He used to hound the group a bit, because being called The Kinks did attract these sorts of people. He used to come down to Top of the Pops, and he was publicist for John Stephen's shop in Carnaby Street. He used to have this place in Earl's Court, and he used to invite me to all these drag queen acts and transsexual pubs. They were like secret clubs. And that's where Ray [Davies] got the idea for 'Lola.' When he was invited too, he wrote it while I was getting drunk."[5]

Despite claims that the song was written about a supposed date between Ray Davies and trans woman actress Candy Darling, Davies has since claimed this rumor to be false. He said on the topic, "I didn't have a date with Candy Darling. We just went out to dinner. I knew it was a drag act."[5]
