It is an NHS guide. My point is this: is it a good NHS guide? Does it help frontline medical and nursing staff to be civil, understanding and better informed when they meet trans patients and trans relatives?

I can only give my personal view, which is that it seems well researched and is presented in a clear way. Whether front line staff take heed of its recommendations is another matter. The NHS after all has the 3rd largest work force on the planet, so discrimination could (and probably does) still occur.

I have not been into hospital as a trans patient, so I cannot judge how well these NHS guidelines work. However when I was looking for the links for Age UK for transgendered people I did find this other NHS document, which seems to support the idea of more tolerance.

Age UK has a series of documents for transgender people who are ageing and how they and various organizations should deal with older and ageing trans people. I have attached the links.

My perception is that the UK is one of the more tolerant societies in the west towards transgendered people. Yes it could be better, but attitudes have changed in the last 7 years (I moved back here from the Netherlands in late 2007), and it seems that ordinary people are more tolerant than they were.

I will copy this forum to my friends list to get more publicity. You could write an article on this subject if you wanted, as that way it would give this subject more publicity here on Transtastic.

When I've been in hospital, recently more than I might have wished....I have received good care and although in drab my clothing/underwear, etc, is identifiable as female or feminine in style, although very modest. 100% of nursing staff are sweet about me and supportive and engaging....the bad experiences have been at the hands of young and inexperienced doctors, commonly from minority ethnic backgrounds where such things as gender variation is perhaps not accepted in the same way. On the whole I have been lucky with the way I've been treated, although I know from friends that that is not necessarily the same consistently positive experience for all girls!

As I work in NHS, I would like to say the majority of frontline staff are not easily fazed, by what walks thro the doors of an A&E dept. Please remember we are only human and sometimes the stress and strains of the job do get to us.

I know that the NHS reflects society in that what people who work in it think will vary enormously. However, its beauty is that whatever they think the majority of those in it in a caring role will try to care for you regardless of whether or not you ate transgender or not. They will generally savour the opportunity to tell friends and family a story beginning "you'll never guess what happened in work today … "

I can't fix everything Tim. The link works fine - but to get technical it is hosted on CDN (content delivery network) that might be restricting opening in from different geographical locations or ISPs.

Or it could simply be that version of PDF does not work on her computer.

And I've not read it - and I don't have time.

on my regular trips to the GP and clinic the NHS Staff are constantly giggling and laughing....however i 'llow them because they are human after all and I am pretty fucking hilarious - that is all.
