Giving our understanding!

Whilst I find it admirable the passion shown for whom we are as individuals in the transgender world, we alienate ourselves in the transgender world and in the world at large.

I have listened to many peoples description over the years as to why we are as we are and a vast majority are from the transgender community. The conclusion I have come to is nobody knows and may never know the true why.

We do what we do because we have a drive to be our own version of the opposite sex. I say it this way because we always forget there are female to male transgender people.

I have my own theories as to why I am as I am and why I do as I do. I do not impose them on others unless I am asked.

I believe gender issues affect so many people its impossible to quantify.

What impulses drive a man to wear bra and panties under a business suit?

Are they similar impulses that drive a person to want to go through the transition?

I believe they are. The only difference is the intensity of the drive, impulse, and need.

    They are both gender issues.

Many people get up on their high horse, waving a banner, but what I have discovered is that it’s their own personal banner they are waving. Some get angry because they see comments which are made as a generality as a personal attack on their individuality as a transgender person.

Unfortunately this type of reaction creates confusion for people who know nothing of the transgender world.

So back to the first line of the thread about the general public becoming aware of the transgender world.

We need to keep things simple to educate the general public because there is such a broad spectrum in the transgenderism.

The law concentrates on protecting the rights of a transitioning person, and quite rightly so. It puts them on a par in legal terms with a gay person. But the TV does not have this luxury. A bi person has the same rights under law as a gay person, but surely a TV falls into a similar slot as a bi person. A foot in both camps as it were.

Sorry for rambling a bit but the point I am trying to make is this; we are all individuals who are who we are for what ever reason which is personal but we are a community whether we realise it or not.

As a community we should come together to educate the public but keep it simple.

As a group of people we are so complex we don’t even understand ourselves so how can the public at large understand us if we confuse them.

  • Pauline Smith Its interesting that we have had complaints about some comments on this post. I decided to let the thread run - even though I think that some of you should read each others posts before firing nasty remarks. As an aside - "Fire, aim ready"...  more
  • Davina M Just letting everyone know, that having read Rias blog, it inspired me to do a blog on autism as well as transgenderism. http://www.transtastic.com/se4/blogs/5033/509/autism-and-transgenderism
  • Davina M With my condition, it'll be a hard journey to follow, as one disability would have an effect.
  • Ria Lacey Pauline, I was amazed to see this thread go on with such "gusto". What I have learned from posting this blog is the diversity of opinions and the intensity that goes behind them. I also learned my knowledge on the subject of trans is limited...  more
