In the social sciences, the word "clique" is used to describe a group of 2 to 12 (averaging 5 or 6) "persons who interact with each other more regularly and intensely than others in the same setting.

The problem is when they use the fact that they're members of a clique in an exclusive manner, to the detriment of others, almost like forming a gang, within a group of people all purportedly there for the same purpose. At these times a little bit of common sense and discretion is called for to avoid isolating others and utimatelythemselves. As Carl Sandburg said,'A society that forgets where it came from, will destroy itself.'

My own personal philosophy towards this site is totally inclusive, either we all count, or no one counts, regardless of race, class or gender....a philosophy I also apply towards the wider society...

Firstly anyone wanting to look at the site rules, please check Support & Resources - Terms of Service which is at the bottom of the main page. Secondly maybe cliques do form here, but any personal abuse to other members is against site rules and is dealt with by the moderators. So if someone is being abused they can make a complaint. Lets not forget that Transtastic is a social website - we all come here to make new friends or chat with existing ones. And yes people make friends here on line and meet together socially...is that a clique or a group of friends meeting? I can only speak for where I live; a group of us in the NW of England meet now and then - sometimes its an event, which is publicized and other times its a small group who meet for a drink or a meal which isn't publicised. Is that a clique?? I don't think so, but I do know that it can be painful to be excluded by a group of people. pauline xxx
