'........to go beyond the stars to see what wonderments are out there.....'

Ok this blog, has nothing really to do with anything much, but I'm getting to that age were I'm starting to sound like Grampa Simpson, when I was a boy............

So imgaine 1975 ( for some of us its very easy), computers were big, extermely big, filling a whole office, all telephones were connected to wires and went no where, colour TV's were  rare and wonderful things, vinly records jumped and crackled to the sounds of music, the milkman still put milk on your doorstep, the local shopkeepers knew your name, and the Beat Bobby knew who your Mum was. Man had finshed walking on the Moon, and some war in a far away place with a strange name had just finished.

And here we have a local State School, much like any other State school in 70's Britain. In the assembly hall the children sat crossed legged. Waiting for a TV programme to start, ( State Schools couldn't afford new fangled things like video recorders). It was a science  programme. The Man on the programme, told us what the World would be like in 25 years. We have people living and working on the Moon, people building bases on Mars. There be Robots to help with all sorts of things. There be cities under the sea. Flying cars, holidays on the Moon and Mars, computers the size of desks. There would be food for everyone, engery for all and this would stopped all wars . All in all a very jolly and wonderful place to live.

Well here we are in the future, 2014! No flying cars, no sities under the sea, no Moon bases or Mars bases, no robots. Poeple still go hungery, the engery is still the same stuff we had in the 70s and we are still fighting wars. Mind you I have a phone that I can put in my back pocket, a computer that sits on my lap, 200 + channels on the TV, my music sound wonderful.

Would I want to good back to the 70s? God No! I couldn't be a crossdresser, I'd be openly beaten and verbally abuse, sent to a mental health centre, have electro shock therapy to cure my perversion. It doesn't matter how loving we look to the past, we can see the long summers and green fields. There is always a dark side, the 70s wasn't a fun place if you were Irish, Black, Asian or Gay. Being different stood you out from the 'norm'.

This is what annoys me about people who talk loving about 'the good old days' and 'traditional values' these things hide the wife beatings, child abuse, racial abuse, homophobia and many more horrible things.

So when we remember the past yes, let look fondly on the good times, but lets also remember the dark times and look down the road to see how far we have come. Because it is not only technology that has move forward, but our attitudes as well.

Thank you for reading my little rant

p.s. I'm still nark that I don't have a robot and I'm not working on the Moon, it's not alot to ask for

  • Rachael Louise Blanche Well Julie, my 'modern day dark times' rant is brewing....... x
  • Peter Oram Let me start with a small caveat - I mean no disrespect to anyone's beliefs. There will always be "dark times" as long as various religions persecute anyone not of their belief, more wares have been fought over because of religion or population...  more
  • Pauline Smith Great blog Racheal. What struck me about the 1970s was the intolerance. The first women's refuge was set up in London about 1970 - Erin Pizzey's first refuge was near where my GF and I lived, at the time. Today, it was announced that last year 5.000...  more
