I have never written one of these blog things before but Pauline asked if I would do one on Cornwall Pride, so here goes.
After an eventful trip down toTrurowe arrived at out hotel right in the centre of town, well almost in the centre. The Riverbank, a very nice little hotel and so friendly. Once Zara (that’s me) had checked us both in we went up to our room to get ready for dinner in the hotel. Once that was over it was off to Bar Qdos for a pre Pride party with entertainment from Rozella. This would have been a great night, but for the flooding earlier in the day. This played havoc with the electrics in the bar and meant for over an hour no drinks could be served. I have to say that Nikki and the rest of the staff we so great and poor Nikki ended up serving drinks by candle light. Rozella was great. So what could have been a great night turned to an amazing one, due to all the great people there.
I have been to one other Pride before and that was in Torquay. So I do not have a lot of experience of this sort of thing, but what I saw and felt all day on Saturday inTruro, really made Torquay Pride seem very underwhelming and a bit sad.
So what made me feel so good! Well the parade route had so many people standing along it waiting to see the Pride flag be carried past. There were so many families there as well, with everyone mixing in together. People of all ages holding the flag and some with their dogs with Pride scarf’s around their necks.
The parade took about an hour to reach its destination of Victoria Park. A lovely park with lots of levels, a fountain and a band stand. Which were used throughout the afternoon to great effect.
There were so many people in the park for the picnic that you had to look for a place to sit. The entertainment went on as everyone arrived and was still going on 4 hours later when we left to get ready for the party on Lemon Quay. Music was provided by several different bands, playing a variety of music, some thing for everyone. It was expertly compared by the lovely Nikki from Bar Qdos. For those that wanted a dance there was also a display buy the Gay Gordon’s around the fountain.
At7pmthe party started in the tent on Lemon Quay. The pride flag was now part of the tent roof and looked great up there.
The acts were once again introduced by Nikki from Bar Qdos. I have no idea how she managed to keep going all day. She was a Star along with all the other committee members.
All the acts were great and the lights show on the stage added to the great atmosphere inside the tent, By11pmmy feet had had enough and we both headed for the hotel while loads of people went of to Bar Qdos to carry on till 2am.
Now the walk back to the hotel was the bit I was dreading the most. We had to go past several very packed Bars with lots of drunken people out in the streets. But to my relief, not one comment was made as we made our way past the bars.
We will both be back next year and I hope that this little bit of text will tempt you to be there as well.
Zara and Minx.
