The Kinks

Apparently there will be a musical of the Kinks music....Sunny Afternoon....and it has a chance of being a huge hit in the West End. Well why not with all those amazing songs penned by songmeister Ray Davies?

As a somewhat ancient tranny who was lucky enough to see the Kinks live at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester in the 1960s (check out google to find out more about the Wheel..and the 1960s) when Ray and Co had yellow ruffled front shirts and were still at the You Really Got Me stage - which I have to say as a teenager was still an amazing stage to be at. I think they also played All of the Day and All of the Night - but it was a long time ago; either way pre big amplifiers it was incredible rock music.

Later Ray penned classics like Lola, Waterloo Sunset and Dedicated Follower of Fashion - "and when he pulls his frillie nylon panties up tight" has to be one of the classic all time lines for trannies...and that was before he wrote Lola.

The other week I was walking along in the centre of Manchester and there were 4 guys singing Kinks songs as buskers (probably about as old as the originals were in the 60s! - so late teens) and they, to my untuned ear, sounded pretty good.

So I suspect that Sunny Afternoon will be a huge success, with this generation and the oldies like me.

I know Lola is a tranny anthem but what is your real favourite Kinks track?

    hugs

  • Alexandra Putney I'm a 'Waterloo Sunset' fan, especially as it was an 'our song' with an early girlfriend. As for 'Lola' and tranny songs, the Kinks' "Out of the Wardrobe" may not be an anthem but it's about as clear a tranny song as there could be and all done...  more
  • stella stiletto my first ever record (45) was 'tired of waiting' but my all-time favourite was 'waterloo sunset' which I happily played in a band throughout the 90's
  • Rachael Louise Blanche I've always preferred The Kinks to The Beetles, Ray Davis in my humble opinion has always been under rated as a song writer
  • Peter Oram I enjoy a few of there numbers but You Really Got Me is my favourite, just by a smidge over Waterloo Sunset and Lola.
