Tolerance

Sometimes in the west - especially in the UK - we take for granted so many freedoms which have been fought for over the years, by all kinds of groups not just the LBGT community. And we value tolerance to all trans gendered people - not just us "special girls".  Here we are free to go places and do things - both on line and out in the real world. Not just in the extended safe "bubbles" of places like Manchester Concord, the Manchester Village or even Sparkle (and similar places and events across the UK) but also the local supermarket, using public transport, going clothes shopping with friends, eating out, doing sports, etc. Doing all the normal things which everyone who is outwith the TG community also does.

Yes we have labels inside our own community....the whole gamut from HPW, CD, TV, TS, Tgirl, tranny, drag queen, "freak"..whatever, all the colours of the gender spectrum.  But they are just labels and although we are not a homogeneous community we do our best to support each other on our own journey through life.  Whether being TG is a blessing or a curse for any of us is up to us in the west, and yes its ultimately our own individual choice whether to enjoy being a Tgirl or view it as a curse. The days when society could stick us in a box or label us as perverts are receding. The recent cookery programme on ITV showed that - one of the semi finalists was a Tgirl, she also runs a bridal shop.

In a week where France has passed the laws making gay marriage legal (in spite of rioting in the streets of Paris) its really saddening to see what is happening in Iran. A man, who is a convicted criminal, has been paraded by the  police through the streets of Marivan dressed in Kurdish women's clothing

He is not a Tgirl, but it has caused outcry from womens' groups in Iran and also from men in a Facebook campaign designed to show that being a woman is nothing to be ashamed of.

Yes the man being punished was not a Tgirl, but the idea that it's punishment to dress a man in women's clothes is not something we would tolerate in the west or on this site.  Surely being a Tgirl means trying to walk in someone else's shoes - whether they have high heels or are flat should make no difference.  And it should never be seen as a punishment, women are too precious to be denigrated in this way.

  • Josephine Green Surely Pauline what you say in the last paragraph is the real issue. Women in Iran are second class citizens, so dressing him as a woman clearly states he is no better than a second class citizen.
  • Marianne Field Spot on Josephine- this is degrading women - the man is simply being used to reinforce an atrocious attitude towards women. But they are throwing in the idea that dressing as a women is wrong for good measure. The Iranian regime is a hateful nest of...  more
