The Sex Change Spitfire Ace

A Channel 4 programme to watch on catch up about Roberta Cowell, Britain's first man to become a woman; and equally important about Michael Dillon the first woman in the world to transition as a man.

This was in the 1940s for Michael and the 1950s for Betty, only just after WW2 so both true pioneers, using totally pioneering surgery. An in depth programme and some scenes are not for the squeamish. I am not sure if it's available outside the UK.

One comment made about Betty during the programme, from the neckup she looked like a woman with her long blonde wigs, formthe neck down she looked like a mechanic. Familiar to many of us who struggle to pass as women.

    hugs

  • Alana Dee Given that Roberta was racing formula single seater race cars I am not surprised she was built like a mechanic from the neck down as those machines were fierce things to control . But did enjoy the programme just a shame things ended in the way it did...  more
  • Pauline Smith The real tragedy was, as is made clear, Roberta's family - they suffered from her denial that they existed. P xx
  • rita clark Thanks Pauline this is an interesting piece about some pioneering people.
