I’ve been Beckie Cannons for years – in excess of fifteen, but it was time for a change based on how I understand and relate to my own gender.
I am more open with my trans status, I say trans with sense of pride. I don’t recognise the terms crossdresser or transvestite in myself, they don’t resonate with me anymore and they haven’t for years – they are not who I am anymore. I also don’t relate to the term transsexual – I’m not. My trans status is not about dressing up, it’s deeper – it is about gender expression as and when I choose and with my own narrative. I am what I am.
Last year I re-joined the Sparkle team – and being part of Sparkle again has been fantastic – and I’m so proud of the history of the organisation and event, and also the current group of talented people I am working, not just trustees but EVERYONE who is pulling together and who collectively make this fantastic event happen. I would be letting them down, and the people who attend The Sparkle Weekend, and those that aspire to join in over the weekend – by not being more open and more transparent.
It was with a very heavy heart and tinge of sadness that I change my last name to my real surname. Cannons has served me well for many years – but this is me, the real me. I have moved on, and the need to less open has gone, at the same time the need to be more open has also arrived.
My name is Fox, and oh do I love that name.
